Screw piles and screw piling.

What is a screw pile? A screw pile is also known as a helical pile, helical anchor, helix pier, screw anchor, helical pier, torque pile and/ or torque anchor. What is screw piling?  In unstable grounds when a traditional cast-in-place foundation system is not possible, screw piling offers a foundation support system for an ever increasing number of applications. Screw piling is the application of a screw pile into the ground. A screw pile is a factory manufactured steel foundation system consisting of a central rod with one or more helix shaped blade plates and a bracket at the end that allows attachment to a structure. The tip is cut on an angle to allow it to penetrate the ground as a pilot. The pile has 'flights' which are flat in pitch to help the pile pull itself into the ground with minimum downforce applied. With the use of an excavator and a hydraulic screw anchor drive motor attached, the screw pile is screwed into the ground to the desired compression torque

Rusin Concrete Construction “shattered expectations with excavation speed” using their new Bigfoot XD 1200 Digga trencher.

Based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Rusin Concrete Construction have been offering a wide range of concrete services for commercial and residential projects for the last 20 years. Earlier this year they were commissioned to excavate grade beams for a multi-unit housing project in Colorado Springs. Project Manager, Tyler Orr explained, “The total structure square footage for the slab on grade was approximately 11612sq m. Grade beams were 300mm wide and 900mm deep below the slab and were the structural component of the project in lieu of typical foundation walls. We trenched about 14km by the end of the project and shattered expectations with the excavation speed.” Rusin purchased the Digga Bigfoot XD 1200 trencher at the World of Concrete convention in Las Vegas especially for the project. It was a bit of a gamble as they had never used a Digga trencher for such an application before, typically digging with a mini excavator. However, all models in the Digga Bigfoot XD trencher

Digga tips - best practice to increase the life of your wearparts.

The cutting teeth & pilot on any auger are wear parts and you can increase the life of them with the help of Digga's best practice tips. The wear life of a tooth or pilot is undefinable. They will be affected by how often they are used, how they are looked after and the ground conditions they are being used in. For example, in non-fracturable ground where the rock is reduced to a powder; the powder is likely to get caught in and around the cutting head and, acting like a sand paper, will wear away both the pocket and the tooth. In hard ground conditions such as rock over heating within the hole can cause the ground to glaze over. The heat will polish the rock making it harder and have a greater influence on the wear of your cutting heads. Digga tips - best practice for removing spoil from your auger.

The best way to remove spoil from your auger is to use a forward, stop, forward, stop control pattern until all the spoil is totally removed. When you have been drilling with your auger it may seem like a good idea to alternate the drive from forward to reverse to clear the auger of spoil once lifted out of the hole but, it can cause torque related stress on the drive gearbox which will lead to premature failure. If you have one of our 2-speed drive units try using the high-speed mode to flick the spoil off the auger. When you are drilling in clay you could also try wetting the auger or spray some watered down detergent on the flights before drilling. There are a number of benefits to screw piling over traditional methods and we often here industry experts saying helical piling is more efficient and better for the environment. Here we dig a little bit deeper to look at some of the pros to screw piling. Screw piling is quick to install - providing the job brief has clearly defined the parameters effectively, screw piling can be completed efficiently. There is no requirement for cement, waiting on setting times or digging out the ground, so you can move straight onto the next one without having to hang about. Measuring and recording - one of the most important features of screw piling is the ability to verify the load capacity during the installation

They were contracted as part of a project with Channel 7’s Better Homes and Gardens to drill piers for a granny flat behind a house in Blacktown, NSW and decided the Digga PD6 Auger Drive unit was the tool for the job.
